Adding Value offers teachers stories, questions and fun activities to do as a follow-up to Gemstones, within the school’s values’ programme.
Like Gemstones, the Adding Value material makes use of Guided Metaphor to help young people reflect on what they value and to make positive changes to the way they think and act.
In their book Therapeutic Metaphors For Children and the Child Within, Joyce C Mills and Richard J Crowley write "Metaphor is a form of symbolic language that has been used for centuries as a method of teaching in many fields. The parables of the Old and New Testaments, the holy writings of the Kabbalah, the Koans of Zen Buddhism, the allegories of literature, the images of poetry and the fairy tales of storytellers - all make use of metaphor to convey an idea in an indirect yet paradoxically more meaningful way."
Guided Metaphor is very similar in approach to Guided Reading where discussion of the text before, after, and sometimes during the reading enhances each student’s understanding of what they are reading.
The Guided Metaphor process uses literal, inference and predictive questions to check the students’ understanding of the main concepts. The process helps students to think more deeply about the issue or problem faced by the character(s), and to link this to real life situations.
Adding Value is free to anyone who wishes to use it. Simply complete the form below and click the Register Button to go on the emailing list to receive two issues per term.
