The Facilitator’s Guide to Career Passport has been developed for facilitators’, teachers and tutors working with young people in a class or group situation. It provides session by session guidelines and a Toolbox of additional resources which can be used as handouts.

More Information about the Facilitator’s Guide
The young people’s Career Passport to Success has eight steps, completion of which leads to being awarded a passport and a certificate.
The Facilitator’s Guide follows these eight steps, some of which contain more information and practice activities than others. However for ease of use within a class or group setting, some of the larger steps have been broken down. As a result the Facilitator’s Guide comprises 13 sessions.
Session 1. Introduction
Learners will be able to:
- Identify what employers are looking for.
- Explain the importance of Career Passport to Success.
- Understand the assessment process.
Session 2. Step 1: Will the Real Me Stand Up Please
Learners will be able to:
- Identify their strengths
- Identify their weaknesses
- Identify things they would like to improve.
Session 3. Step 2: Choosing a Career Right For Me
Learners will be able to:
- Explain why choosing a career to suit their personality is important
- Conduct a self analysis of their personality
- Use an existing career list to help them make a career decision
Session 4. Step 3: Goal setting – Writing SMART goals and a Plan of Action.
Learners will be able to:
- Write a SMART goal
- Write a Plan of Action
- Identify people who can support them in achieving their goals.
Session 5. Step 4: Listening to Your Inner Voice
Learners will be able to:
- Explain that self esteem can be affected by negative self-talk
- Change their attitude with positive self-talk
- Identify negative or unhelpful aspects of their thinking and use more positive ways of thinking.
Session 6. Step 5: Key Skill 1 — Dealing with Stress
Learners will be able to:
- Identify some personal stressors
- Identify ways to deal with stress
Session 7. Step 5: Key Skill 2 — Making Good Decisions
Learners will be able to:
- Use a decision-making tool
Session 8. Step 5: Key Skill 3 — Time Management
Learners will be able to:
- Identify their time management strengths
- Set goals for improving areas of Time Management weakness.
Session 9. Step 5: Key Skill 4 — Problem-solving
Learners will be able to:
- Use two problem-solving tools
Session 10. Step 6: Part 1 — Presenting Yourself - Curriculum Vitae
Learners will be able to:
- Explain the purpose of a CV
- Produce a CV and Personal Statement
Session 11. Step 6: Part 2 — Presenting Yourself – The Interview and Personal Image
Learners will be able to:
- Prepare for, and present themselves at, an interview
- Explain the importance of ‘image’.
Session 12. Step 7: Putting it all Together
Learners will be able to:
- Work in a team to plan and implement a project
- Use skills learned in Career Passport for the benefit another person.
Session 13. Step 8: — Now It’s Up to You
Learners will be able to:
- State something positive that comes from failure
- Assess their achievements from the programme.
Career Passport and NZQA
There are a number of topics in Career Passport that could contribute towards the achievement of NZQA Unit Standards.
Below are listed the Unit Standards that could be considered when facilitating Career Passport to Success.

| Unit Standard 7123 | v 3 | Demonstrate knowledge of problem solving and apply a problem solving technique. |

| Unit Standard 3503 | v 4 | Participate and communicate in a team or group to complete a routing task. |
| Unit Standard 8817 | v 4 | Listen attentively and interact during discussion. |
