Question 1
What if my students have not done Gemstones in year 7, 8 or 9?
Answer: It will be useful for you to know what has happened in the Gemstones programme so that you can build on it as you progress through Travel Log. We have therefore provided a copy of Gem of the First Water in your kitset of materials so that you can become familiar with what has gone before and who the main characters are. Gemstones uses stories from Gem of the First Water that deal with the issues of:
- Family Relationships
- Choices
- Managing Anger and Fear
- Resisting Alcohol and Drugs
- Overcoming Bullying
- Appreciating and Valuing Life
Question 2
If Travel Log is based on 5 short stories why is there a copy of The Travels of Plymouth in the kit?
Answer: It has been found that when the teacher knows the full story, he or she can make connections for the students between the stories. Teachers have also found that some classes want to hear the whole story once they have done the Travel Log programme.
Question 3
You say this is a resource for Years 7 to 9. How do you see it fitting into an already crowded syllabus?
Answer: The issues are so important that we believe that Travel Log should be done with whole classes as part of the Health syllabus. However school counsellors have also used Travel Log successfully with small groups.
