Teachers

Travel Log is a classroom resource for students at transition points from years 9 to 12 (13 to 17 years of age). The programme uses Therapeutic Storytelling Intervention (TSI) to help young people make sense of some of the issues that confront them during their adolescent years and to create a process through which they can resolve them.

The programme reflects key considerations of the New Zealand Curriculum. The five stories offer students the opportunity to explore and reflect on their own values and those of others. They offer teachers a vehicle by which the five key competencies can be further developed.

How Can Travel Log be Used in the Secondary School?

Transition or Special groups
Travel Log has been used very successfully in secondary schools by RTLBs and school counsellors, with groups of young people who need guidance or who are in Transition classes.

Health Education
In Health education students learn 'skills and understandings to take critical action to promote personal, interpersonal, and societal well being.' The key strand into which Travel Log fits in the New Zealand Curriculum is the strand called Relationships with Other People. As an example, at Level 6 the Curriculum states that students will:

Relationships

Demonstrate an understanding of how individuals and groups affect relationships by influencing people's behaviour, beliefs, decisions, and sense of self-worth.

Identity, sensitivity and respect

Plan and evaluate strategies recognising their own and other people's rights and responsibilities to avoid or minimise risks in social situations.

Interpersonal Skills

Plan strategies and demonstrate interpersonal skills to respond to challenging situations appropriately.

Because Travel Log explores five specific issues that relate to the curriculum, it can be used in the Health Education programme to help meet these learning objectives.
